Dr. James Pilkington, Passes Away, Track Coach, UCM Warrensburg, Missouri





A celebration of life for Coach Pilkington took place on Saturday, April 27 in Springfield, MO. at the James River Assembly south campus in Clark Chapel at 10:oo am.

January 23, 1932 - March 6, 2013
Dr. James Walker Pilkington was born January 23, 1932 to James Jeffers Pilkington and Bernadine Atteberry Pilkington in Red Oak, Iowa. He flew into the arms of The Lord on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 11 days.

Biography

Jim graduated from Red Oak High in 1949, where he excelled in academics, track and field, and football. He attended the University of Iowa and then transferred to Drake University where he obtained his bachelor's degree in Education. On January 31, 1953, Jim married the love of his life, Carol Laine Sellergren. To this union four children were born: Jeff, Gail, Matt and Kim. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He procured his Master's degree from the University of the Pacific and his Doctorate Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska. GO BIG RED! Dr. Pilkington spent his career as a coach and professor at the university level. Prior to retiring, he coached and taught at Central Missouri State University (CMSU) in Warrensburg for 29 years. He started the Mule Relays and the women's track and field program which produced many NCAA All American athletes and several Olympic prospects. He was inducted into many athletic Halls of Fame. After retiring, Jim spent several years living at Lake of the Ozarks. In 2005, Jim and Carol moved to Ozark, MO to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He volunteered at James River Assembly after moving to Ozark.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, Matt; parents, Jim and Bernadine; younger brother, Ross and his wife Pauline Pilkington; and sister-in-law, Penny Sellergren.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Pilkington of Ozark, MO; children: Jeff (Lisa) Pilkington of Urbandale, IA, Gail Bodenhausen Cyr of Ozark, MO, and Dr. Kim (Lisa) Pilkington of Nixa, MO; 12 grandchildren: Tera (Chris) Schmidt, Gara (Brian) Powell, Gavin (Megan) Bodenhausen, Gabrael (Michael) Lampe, Gunnar Cyr, Josh (Darcie) Storms, Matthew Storms, Evan Pilkington, Spencer Pilkington, Jansen Pilkington, Taylor Pilkington and Conner Pilkington; great grandchildren: Peighton, Raleigh, and Durham Powell, Chanse and Maggie Bodenhausen, and Graham Lampe; nephews: Mark (Kari) Pilkington and Jay (Janna) Pilkington, many great nieces and nephews.

at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak, IA
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak with Military Honors

  Named to the Missouri Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984, Dr. James Pilkington established an outstanding reputation as a track and field coach during his 28-year tenure at Central. The professor emeritus of physical education came to Central in 1971 as head coach for track and field and cross country. He served at that post for 12 years before devoting full time to teaching as a professor of physical education. Although he is proud of his accomplishments as a teacher, his coaching career is one that is marked with many successes. He started the women’s track and field program at Central, and under his guidance Central athletes earned some 52 NCAA All-American certificates. Six of them were selected for Olympic Trials and two national track and field champions were named. He also originated the Mule track and field major meets, including the Mule Relays and Cross Country Festival. Dr. Pilkington has assisted with major track and field events across the state and nation. He served as a track starter for nearly all universities in Missouri, was a started for NCAA national championships and was a track started at Big Eight and Big 12 conference championships. Dr. Pilkington earned his bachelor’s degree at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, master’s degree at the University of Pacific, Stockton, California, and doctorate at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He and his wife, Carol, have three children, Gail, Kim and Jeff.

Jim Pilkington
A former track and field and cross country coach from 1971-83, Pilkington was the founder of the Mule Relays. He served as a professor at Central Missouri for 28 years (1971-99) and has been a starter at meets all over the country. Some of the meets include the NCAA-II National Championships, the USTAF National Championships, the Mule Relays for several years, and hundreds of high school district and state meets. He also founded the Midwestern America National Jump Championships, which was the largest jump meet in the Midwest. While a coach, he led UCM to the 1978 MIAA cross country title and tutored seven All-Americans in his career.

Coach - Peru State College’s greatest Cross Country teams were led by their coach, Dr. James Pilkington, who served PSC throughout most of the 1960s. Six times his Cross Country teams placed in the Top 10 in the NAIA Nationals including a third place finish in 1965. On the home course his runners were 144-6, and Pilkington- coached Bobcats earned 10 All American citations. He was an Assistant Coach in both football and track and a respected faculty member at PSC as well.
